Hazel's memories of Pearlie

Created by Richard 13 years ago
I have lots of memories of special times with Pearlie. I remember a marvellous day out with Pearlie when she took me to Hunstanton and we had a picnic on the beach. I had my first taste of cold peas in mayonnaise. I also fondly remember the picnics we enjoyed in Cambridge and making tea on the spirit stove. Pearlie drove down to Pontypridd and visited me once in the Mini. She arrived without any prior warning. I had been out with the children at the Park all day swimming, etc. and minutes after our return Sally had accidentally put her hand through the glass in the back door cutting her wrist requiring stitches: she still has the scar!. We were at the hospital when Pearlie arrived and not gaining an answer she went around the back and saw the broken glass and blood and guessed there had been an accident. It was a lovely surprise to find her waiting for us on our return. Her kindness was unbounded in lots of special ways. She used to send me a postal order in a letter just before Mothers Day and our mother's birthday for me to buy mother a present. The presents we received from Pearlie (and Uncle Aleks of course) at Christmas were always very special too. I recall staying with her quite a few times and she was always so loving and kind and caring. She told me she had wanted to adopt me when I was little but our mother refused. All my happy childhood memories are of the many visits to Cambridge - all our school holidays being spent there every year including extra times we had off school. There were occasions when Mum (as we called my Grandmother Sophia Phillips) was very ill and I would cry myself to sleep at night thinking that if she died there would be nobody to love me. But, of course, Pearlie would still have been there to love us but when you are a child you don't think of others, just the person you think you may lose. I am just glad that with Pearlie's devoted care Mum survived until I became an adult and more able to cope with her loss. 0ur family has now suffered another great loss - our own dear Pearlie who we will never ever forget and who is irreplaceable. Rest in peace dearest Pearlie."
